The Kings of Leon Have Created Their Own Genre

Even though the Kings of Leon have quite the following, many are not aware of how the boys were raised. Their father, Leon Followill, was an evangelist who was always on the road, traveling from one church to the next. The Followill family traveled together, so no one person was left behind. This meant that the boys were raised on the road, which could — very possibly — be the reason they are as special as they are today. Before they even reached their teenage years, the boys had traveled and camped at most of the southern states in the U.S.

During their time on the road, the boys still had to study, but they also had to find creative ways to stay entertained. They were forced to use their imaginations to stay happy. Their love for music came in handy, and was multiplied during this time in their life. Nathan and Caleb — the two eldest members of the band — were soon recognized and RCA wanted to sign them on. The boys; however, would not move forward without their youngest brother and cousin. The cousin Matthew was in high school, andt their youngest brother — Jared — was still finding his place in music. But this did not matter to the boys, and they soon go their way; all four boys were signed with RCA.

Even if you knew these boys, as they were growing up, or had heard of them, you wouldn’t know it — none of them go by their first names. The respect they have for the family is astonishing; in fact, the band’s name was inspired by their father and grandfather. The band’s name is unique, but the music is even more so. The boys found a way to intermix rock, garage, punk, and indy music giving the Kinds of Leon a very unique and new sound.

The release of their first album — Youth and Young Manhood — left many breathless. The music was so catchy that Rolling Stones Magazine gave the album 4 out of 5 stars. The boys are still young, so young — in fact — that they youngest of the three brothers — Jared — is still learning his way around a guitar. This has not stopped them; they continually work diligently to become the best at what they do. So far, this dedication is paying off. Actually, the release of their second album — Aha Shake Heartbreak — got the band attention from legends like Elvis Costello, Pearl Jam, and Bob Dylan. There’s not really much else to ask for.

The Kings of Leon have many things going for them, one of which being their energy. Whether you call their on stage performances energy or antics — like in Europe — they definitely have passion when they are on stage. The Kings of Leon started their North American Tour in Canada in September, went south to Texas, and came to a halt in Tennessee in October — with numerous stops on the way, of course.
